While there are so many topics over the internet about buying a "Gaming laptop" you'll surely find this different.

So lets come to one of the most basic question. "Why do we need a gaming PC/Laptop when there are consoles available at a much lower price?" I would rather call this a subjective question. But however with a console all you can do is game and nothing else but with a gaming PC/laptop you can do much more things than just gaming and also as a matter of fact good gaming machines can offer great graphics when compared to those consoles with fixed graphics settings.
So now lets come down to another question. "What are the advantages of a gaming laptop over a gaming PC?" The main advantage is that if you often travel around laptop will be your chose because of its mobility. However this option will increase the price and decrease the performance.

When you look around the internet for a gaming laptop you come across some laptops at a real cheap price with a gaming laptop tag offering 4 gigs of Video memory (4GB graphic cards). But in reality these are just marketing techniques to attract customers making them believe it can really offer something great because of those huge numbers. In reality things totally change. Such laptop's graphics have high video memory and very less performance. This because of the basic fact that higher video memory does not mean a higher performance. There are a lot of factors that bring out the performance of a graphic card like the number of cuda cores, clock speed, memory bandwidth, effective cooling system etc...
There are two major manufacturers of GPUs for laptop, they are AMD and Nvidia. I personally wont recommend getting a laptop with an AMD GPU as they are comparatively less in performance, thermal throttles, has some driver issues and less battery efficiency. Nvidia is the best choice.
So the next question comes. "How do I know if my laptop has a good graphics card? or How do I come to know if a laptop has a Good or bad GPU?" The simplest way is to learn how Nvidia names its GPUs. (To know more on Nvidia's nomenclature refer here). I would say that anything below a GTX 970M wont get you a real gaming performance. GTX 960 and the GTX 965M sure does a decent performance but not a good one. So to get a good gaming laptop you need to push you budget atleast to 1200$ to get a decent gaming PC.

Does that mean Alienware, MSI and Asus are crap?
No. They are really awesome gaming machines but little pricey with less features comparatively. If you much more involved with showing off, consider branding important, and have enough money ofcourse, you can choose them.
